Your Guide to the Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants in Bath, UK

Bath UK England Britain vegan and vegetarian restaurants food

Nestled in amongst some of Britain's most beautiful green countryside, Bath is famed for its Roman Baths, stunning Georgian architecture, and buzzing music / arts scene. The Romans were the first to take advantage of Bath’s natural hot springs, using them as a thermal spa which still stand strong today (pictured). Bath was then developed into an elegant spa city in the 18th century when much of its impressive architecture was built, including the renowned Royal Crescent and Circus. Visitors tend to get caught up in Bath's magical charm, including writers like Jane Austin, Charles Dickens and Mary Shelley, who all drew inspiration from the beautiful surroundings.

You may be visiting Bath to see some of these sights, to absorb some local culture, or to take advantage of the huge number of quirky and independent shops. Either way if, like me, a highlight of any trip away from home revolves around trying lots of amazing plant-based food and getting inspiration for new vegan dishes, then you certainly won't be short for options in Bath. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to try all of the options if you were visiting for a week, let alone just for the weekend.

That's why I've put together this guide to the vegan and vegetarian restaurants, cafes and shops in Bath. Hopefully it'll help you decide which places to try, or it may just inspire you to give Bath a visit, which I assure you won't be a disappointment - both for the incredible vegan food and for everything else this wonderful city has to offer.

THE GREEN ROCKET CAFE (vegan)

1 Pierrepont Street, Bath, BA1 1LB

The Green Rocket Café is a well established plant-based restaurant, right in the heart of town, with beautiful views of Bath Abbey and Parade Gardens. This multi-award winning independent restaurant has a very relaxed vibe, but hard at work in the kitchen are highly talented chefs creating an array of sophisticated yet hearty food, all from scratch. Famed for their vegan breakfasts, they also serve up aromatic coffees, delicious lunch and homemade afternoon tea every day.

On Fridays and Saturdays, they're also open for dinner in the evenings - this is my favourite time to come as the chefs really get to show off their talents. Options include their smoked mushroom, chestnut and sage sausages with mustard mash, gravy, wilted spinach and onion rings - a wonderful vegan take on a British classic (pictured). Or their rich and fragrant Vietnamese coconut curry bowl with fresh vegetables, tofu, jasmine rice, and pickled vegetable salad (pictured). For dessert you could try their vegan sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, rich chocolate torte with honeycomb and ice cream, or their home made raw cheesecakes with raw almond cream (pictured). They’ve also just released a cookbook so you can recreate these phenomenal dishes at home!

CASCARA (vegan)

3 Upper Borough Walls, Bath, BA1 1RG

A wonderful addition to the vegan scene in Bath is Cascara - a vegan cafe serving up breakfast, lunch, ridiculously good homemade cakes, smoothies, juices, and speciality tea and coffee. Positioned right in the heart of Bath, it’s the perfect chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city so you can truly relax and indulge your taste buds. You’ll be greeted by super-friendly staff, a relaxing cosy atmosphere, and some incredible vegan food and drink, like their all day breakfast options or the famous kimchi and cheeze toastie, which you could eat in or take with you to meander round the shops with.

INDIAN TEMPTATION (vegan and vegetarian)

9-10 High Street, Bath, BA1 5AQ

Indian Temptation could easily be missed, because the restaurant is on the first floor and the small entrance is a little tucked away. But be sure not to miss this gem - especially if you love Indian food - because it's a favourite among the Bath locals who keep coming back for their delicious home made vegan and vegetarian curries. You can order the more traditional curry options or, if you like to try a bit of everything, you can go for their famous vegan thali (pictured) which comes with a beautiful selection of curries, dhal, vegetable side dishes, dosa, and a dessert! And with stunning views of Bath Abbey (which become even more magical when lit up at night) you have a pretty enviable backdrop to enjoy your food against.

Oak (vegan and vegetarian)

2 North Parade Passage, Bath, BA1 1NX

Previously called Acorn, this vegan and vegetarian restaurant has transformed to Oak. Located in the centre of Bath, you can enjoy modern gourmet food and watch how top quality fresh vegetables can (and should) take centre stage. Set in a historic Georgian building, Oak opens for lunch and dinner every day so you can enjoy some sophisticated dishes such as their starter of 'old donkey carrots', which are cooked slowly then fire charred and served with pickled carrot, parsley puree, carrot and cashew puree, and seeded spelt grain (pictured). For main course you might enjoy their ingenious whole cauliflower which is broken down and cooked in various ways (roasted florets, truffled puree, pickled core, sauteed leaf, fenugreek and onion croquette, spelt grain and tarragon oil). Their vegan chocolate and coffee parfait with chocolate ganache (pictured) is a dessert you'll dream about for years to come. If you can't decide what to order you can go for their five course tasting menu and can even opt for the wine matching if you'd like to try delicious fine vegan wines that are paired with each of the courses.

CHAIWALLA (vegan)

42 Monmouth Street, Bath, BA1 2AN

Chaiwalla serves up Vegan Indian street food in the centre of Bath. It's a small shop-front so it could also be easily missed, but the incredible smells wafting from their tiny kitchen where everything is made are sure to stop you in your tracks and drag you towards their food in a trance-like state, just like in the old cartoons. You could grab some channa dhal (vegan lentil curry served with rice) or their samosa chaat - a classic Indian street food dish made with a samosa broken down and immersed into a chickpea curry, covered with fresh onions and tamarind, sprinkled with chickpea rice noodles. Or my favourite are their wraps - filled with either their fresh hot Indian falafels or their onion bhajis and packed with salad, mango chutney, and tamarind sauce. They're open every day for lunch from 11.30am until 5pm (4pm on Sundays).

ROOTED CAFE (vegan and vegetarian)

20 Newbridge Road, Bath, BA1 3JX

Rooted Cafe and Supper Room is an independent and family run business offering forward thinking local vegetarian and vegan food on the western side of Bath. Their mission is to bring wholesome plant-based flavours from around the world straight to your table. Try their signature full Indian breakfast - grilled paratha, tempered dhal, curried scrambled tofu, mango lime achar, coconut yoghurt and patcha chutney, washed down with a plant-based lassi (both pictured). They also do full English breakfasts and other traditional brunch options, and also lunch offers a range of Indian dishes like their ‘railway tiffin’ alongside western classics like their original gangster burger with fried and slaw. They’re also open on Friday nights for their terrace menu, and offer superb veggie and vegan Sunday roasts. These sell out quickly so be sure to call ahead and book!

DEMUTH'S COOKERY SCHOOL (vegan)

6 Terrace Walk, Bath, BA1 1LN

While you're in Bath do you fancy learning how to cook some amazing plant-based dishes to expand your repertoire and impress your friends when you get home? Well, Demuth's has you covered. They run cooking courses and day (or half-day) classes ranging from Asian street food and Ethiopian cooking, to bread baking and seasonal salads. Taught by experienced chefs in their modern, spacious and inviting kitchen, all their classes are vegan with some raw and gluten-free options too. They even run vegan diploma courses throughout the year if you really wanted to improve your technical abilities, or if you're visiting Bath with a group you can book the school for the day and choose whichever course you like!

HARVEST (vegan and vegetarian)

37 Walcot Street, Bath, BA1 5BN

If you're staying in Bath and need some supplies, then Harvest will come in very handy indeed. They sell all sorts of food, drinks, store cupboard staples, frozen foods and they even have an awesome deli selling vegan stews, sandwiches, pies and cakes. Everything in the shop is vegetarian with the majority being vegan, and most products are local and ethically sourced. Harvest is a worker-owned cooperative, and their ethos is to provide ethically assured, healthy and fair trade produce with many local artisan products which can make the perfect gift to bring back for someone from your trip to Bath!

BEERCRAFT OF BATH (vegan and vegetarian options)

3 Argyle Street, Pulteney Bridge, Bath, BA2 4BA

To wash everything down? Well if you enjoy a tipple, then Beercraft of Bath has a great selection of vegan beers and ciders. The staff are super helpful too and happy to tell you which beers are vegan. My favourite they stock has to be Electric Bear which is brewed in Bath, and the head brewer is himself vegan, so the vast majority of their beers are vegan friendly. Plus their branding is awesome, which to me is half the fun of  choosing a tasty beer!

MISSION BURRITO (vegan and vegetarian options)

4 New Street, Bath, BA1 2AF

Mission Burrito is an independent chain of Mexican restaurants, making ridiculously good burritos with fresh ingredients from scratch every day. They do serve up meat but they're definitely worth a mention in this article because they have some awesome vegan options, and unlike many burrito places I've been to, their rice and guacamole are both vegan. So their vegetarian burritos, tacos, rice box and salads are all vegan friendly. Watch out for their vegan specials too - their black bean and butternut squash chipotle chilli burrito (pictured) was so popular that they now put it on for the first week of every month!

THE STABLE (vegan and vegetarian options)

1-3 Westgate Building, Kingsmead Square, Bath, BA1 2AE

The Stable is another place that does serve meat, but I couldn't miss it out of this article because they have a dedicated vegan menu which has some mouth-watering options. And you can tell these vegan options weren't just an after-thought as they often are in many restaurants - options include 'heart skipped a beet', 'the good life' or 'hazelnutter' (pictured) which are all made with their famous sourdough bases, rich tomato sauce, fresh local vegetables, and vegan cheeses. They even have awesome vegan puddings such as their rich brownie with raspberry coulis, or tender cider poached pear, both served with vegan ice cream.

YAK YETI YAK (vegan and vegetarian options)

12 Pierrepont Street, Bath, BA1 1LA

Yak Yeti Yak brings a taste of authentic Nepalese cuisine to the UK in this relaxed and informal independent restaurant in the heart of Bath. If you haven’t tried Nepalese food before, expect a beautiful, fragrant hybrid of Asian influences, with many dishes having Indian, Thai and Tibetan origins. And there's no finer example than Yak Yeti Yak, who take pride in cooking their Nepalese cuisine to perfection: everything is freshly home cooked, with the talented chefs bringing their years of experience cooking in Nepal to treat us to some classic dishes (and family favourites) here in Bath.

They do have meat on the menu, but as traditional Nepalese food tends to be vegan, naturally some of their best dishes are plant-based. Try their incredible vegetable momos, Nepalese-style spiced dumplings which are one of the most popular foods in Nepal. Their musurko dal is also a must - orange lentils cooked with mild spices, then refried with garlic-infused vegan ghee. And you can't go wrong with any of their freshly made vegetable dishes, which are cooked to order so you can tell them how spicy you like them!

SWOON (vegan and vegetarian options)

15 Kingsmead Square, Bath, BA1 2AE

Had a lovely vegan meal at one of these amazing Bath restaurants and now looking for something sweet to round off your day/evening? Make sure you head to Swoon (trust me, you won’t be disappointed). They have a delicious range of vegan sorbetti which are all so rich and creamy that you might not at first believe that they are in fact vegan! The trick to getting them so smooth and flavoursome is using the freshest ingredients, and churning that little bit slower to make them even creamier.

Swoon is a small independent establishment with just two outlets, in Bath and Bristol. All of their sorbetti and gelatos are made by their talented chefs on site and I’m not at all surprised that they’ve won several Great Taste awards. They have two permanent vegan sorbetti flavours on the menu - rich dark chocolate and vibrant mango. Then they have guest flavours each month, so there are always several vegan sorbetti to choose from (don’t worry, they’ll let you taste a couple before you choose). Guest flavours have included pistachio (using the best Italian pistachios from Bronte), raspberry, pear, and blackberry with lavender. I like to get experimental by combining flavours - great combos include the dark chocolate with pistachio, or the raspberry with mango.

Bath always has new shops and restaurants popping up, so if I've missed any or if something opens that you think should be included in this guide, send me an email or leave a comment below and I'll be sure to check it out!

Your Guide to Broadway Vegan Market

Broadway Vegan Market Review

If you're vegan or vegetarian and you live in London, then like me you'll probably delight in the fact that there's now a regular market, open every Saturday from 10am - 4pm, dedicated to incredible vegan street food. Or, if you're visiting London, a trip here should definitely be on the itinerary, because it's like coming to a free mini vegan food festival, except you can just wander in and out at any time, and with a really laid-back atmosphere. Pretty much every taste or craving is catered for, almost to the point where there's TOO MUCH to choose from. The solution to this? Bring as many friends as possible so you can all try something different and sample a bit of each other's food. Or just keep coming back, that works too. To help you decide what to opt for, or just to inspire you to give this little gem a visit, here's a (non-exhaustive) list of some of the delights on offer.

Your Guide To Vegan Broadway Market

(London Fields Primary School, Westgate St, London E8 3RU )

Eat chay - In Vietnamese, chay means vegan. Their food is an incredible fusion of punchy, fresh flavours, with a modern twist on Vietnamese and Korean classics. For example, their Korean BBQ banh mi (baguette) stuffed with incredibly ‘meaty’ grilled soy based strips, pickled carrots, fresh herbs, mushroom walnut pate, spicy mayo, and crispy onions is street food at its finest. Also on the menu is a lemongrass Chick'n banh mi and a hearty Vietnamese noodle salad, so there's something for everyone.

Kally Cooks – Indian food is one of my favourite cuisines, and what better example of how to do it properly than Kally Cooks. Offering up a street food feast - you can get cauliflower and quinoa spiced cakes, perfectly tender rice, rich aubergine puree (slow-cooked for six hours), homemade coriander & apple chutney, plus a mint, lemon & carrot yoghurt dressing, all for just £7.50. It's great to know that while Kally creates the most amazing-tasting food, she also commits to ensuring the meals are as healthy and nourishing as possible. What's more, Kally gives employment training and mentoring opportunities to women who have received hardship - way to go Kally!

I am nut ok – these spreads, made from nuts and a few other simple ingredients, are pure genius. They're seriously tasty, and can be used to spread on crackers, as a dip for pitta / veg, as a flavoursome sandwich filling, or pretty much any other occasion where you'd otherwise use hummus or a cheese spread. They have three distinctly different flavours: ‘Cashewlater’ – a creamy, cheesy, cashew spread; ‘Smokeydokey’ – a bold-flavoured (and a bit spicy) smoked cashew cream; and my personal favourite ‘Foiegeddaboutit’ – a walnut and mushroom pate, flavoured with a hint of truffle for a really rich flavour. They have free tasting samples on offer so you can try them out before choosing your favourite to buy and take home with you.

We are ima – think of vegan sushi and you probably think of avocado or cucumber rolls. And, while there's nothing wrong with that, thanks to ima vegan sushi can be way more exciting and imaginative. They create beautiful sushi 'burritos' stuffed with BBQ pulled sweet potato or Katsu cauliflower. And their fresh sushi sets contain awesome flavour combinations like sweet chilli tofu, sweet potato & avocado, and asparagus with their special pickle spread.

Veeg London – these guys create healthy and tasty vegan street food dishes, centred around seasonal, locally sourced vegetables, and packed with punchy herbs and spices. Their food is inspired from around the globe, with incredible dishes such as: butternut squash and chickpea curry; vegan meatballs in tomato, basil and oregano sauce; and Moroccan vegetable tagine – all served on bulgar wheat or soft Jasmine rice for £6. The perfect kind of food to thoroughly warm and nourish you, just what we need at this time of year!

Dees Table - we all need some more Jamaican sunshine in our lives, and Dee's Table comes as close to transporting us to paradise as we could possibly hope while in wintery London. They serve up modern vegan Jamaican food that's to die for. Grab some vegan jerk 'ribs' with ginger beer BBQ sauce, on a coco-roti stuffed with plantain and callaloo. You can also devour some warming red pea soup or their deliciously flaky patties filled with perfectly spiced sweet potato and lentils.

Leles London – while Lele's cafe is open every day on Lower Clapton Road serving up delicious vegan food and coffee, they also have a stall at Broadway Vegan Market (and Victoria Park Market on Sundays) selling jaw-dropping patisserie cakes and tarts that are worthy of any high-end window display in Paris. Grab something sweet to round off your street food experience or buy some treats to take home with you - they have a great selection for any taste - fruity tarts, rich chocolatey brownies, and spectacular cakes like the Oreo raw cheesecake that was stopping everyone (including me) in their tracks!

A match made in heaven – great hummus and pitta chips for dipping. ChicP makes amazingly healthy and colourful vegetable hummus. And the best part? Eating ChicP hummus is helping to tackle food waste, because the dips are made from surplus or wonky raw vegetables that would otherwise be thrown away. Flavours include: carrot, ginger and turmeric; beetroot, horseradish and sage; and a mega herby green hummus. Use it as a spread, dolloped on salads, or best of all, dipped with Soffles Pitta Chips - bags of roasted pitta chips in amazing flavours: chilli & garlic; or rosemary and thyme. They're made with simple fresh ingredients and then oven roasted in a little olive oil until crunchy... genius!

Nini Organics vegan beauty products

Nini organics – Vegan Broadway Market has impressive goodies to offer other than food. You can also take away some indulgent vegan beauty products like Nini's 100% natural and organic oils, balms, scrubs, and masks. Their original products are tested on themselves and other Nini fans – never on animals, plus everything's hand-made on a small scale so they have 100% control over quality. Everyone deserves some pampering now and again, especially in the middle of winter, so why not do it in organic, cruelty-free style!

Liha beauty - this amazing duo combine the rich botanical life of West Africa with traditional English aromatherapy. And I love that they just make a few products - because you know that they can concentrate on making those few products really, really good. Treat yourself or get someone a unique gift such as their shea butter, idan oil, or their handmade African black soap. These natural and organic products are handmade in small batches in Hackney (and Cheltenham), they're 100% vegan, and made with simple natural ingredients that your skin will love.

Jackpot nut spread – double roasted salted peanuts and a little rapeseed oil are the only simple ingredients that go into this delicious PB. The result is an amazing natural flavour and a unique creamy consistency. And guess what? Jackpot also supports the Music Venue Trust, giving the local live music community a welcome boost. Double win!

Natural born wine – all of this shopping and eating leaving you in need of a little tipple? Well you're in luck because Natural Born Wine is dedicated to finding and celebrating biodynamic and natural wines from around the world. I love how each bottle comes with a story telling the tales of origins and the growers, with information about the environmental and ethical choices they’ve made throughout the production. We should all pay more attention to how and where our food and drinks are made. It helps that each one is delicious too!

A Vegan Guide to Borough Market, London

A vegan guide to the street food available at Borough Market, London

Borough Market is London's oldest food market, dating back over 1000 years. You can feel the history and heritage as you meander around the food stalls, but that doesn't take away from the bustling and dynamic energy of this ever-evolving market. I've not been anywhere else in the world that brings together so many regional cuisines and cultures from around the globe. It's something I highly recommend to anyone visiting London, and if you're a local like me, this is a treasure you should take advantage of as often as you can.

A Vegan Guide to Borough Market

There are loads of vegan options at Borough Market if you know where to look

Coming to Borough Market as a vegan may seem a little daunting at first glance - there are a lot of stalls selling meats, fish, cheese, and meaty street food. But spend a little time exploring and you'll soon realise that there's more vegan food available than you could possibly sample even if you came every day for a week. And if, like me, you worry that you might panic buy from the first vegan stall you see - and then get food envy as you discover all the other cuisines you could've gone for - then you should find this vegan guide to the food stalls at Borough Market pretty useful.

Vegan street food - burgers and hotdogs

One of the first vegan stalls you may see, partly because the queue usually snakes well around the corner, is The Big V. Selling incredible 100% vegan seitan mushroom burgers (with optional vegan cheese and fake bacon, aka 'facon'). These vegan burgers are famous and it's understandable why people line up to get their hands on one for lunch - the burger patties look and taste incredibly 'meaty' and topped with slow roasted tomato relish, house burger sauce, pickles and red onion, they really are the perfect burger experience. They also sell vegan hotdogs (classic garlic sausage or chimichurri) and 'v-bowls' so there's something for everyone.

Vegan street food - Egyptian koshari

Koshari Street, as the name implies, sells koshari - a delicious vegan staple in Egypt that consists of a pot of rice, pasta, lentils and chickpeas topped with zesty tomato sauce, caramelised onions and doqqa... a crumbly spicy mix. Sold on roadside stalls and restaurants throughout Egypt, this national dish is one you have to try! Everything Koshari Street sells at Borough Market is vegan or vegetarian, with other options including delicious Egyptian salads and falafels. The staff are super-friendly and very happy to answer any questions you have about their ingredients.

Vegan Indian street food

For something to really warm your soul there's Gujarati Rasoi - a vegetarian Indian street food stall where most of their dishes are in fact vegan. Their food is best described as Indian with a twist, and you can tell how much love and attention they put into their dishes. My favourites here are their chaat (a delicious black chickpea dish), the warming-dhal made with split mung beans, and their koftas served in a rich, spicy tomato sauce.

Vegan meze dishes at Borough Market

There's also amazing middle-eastern meze served at Arabica - they have a restaurant in the market but outside they serve mouth-watering fresh meze dishes. The best lunches from here consist of a couple of dips (like their hummus and babaganoush), a couple of salads (roasted artichoke salad, tabbouleh, butterbeans in tomato sauce are favourites) and a couple of 'finger foods' (like stuffed vine leaves and Beiruti falafels).

Vegan liquorice sweets

For something to satisfy your sweet tooth, why not try Sweet Roots for a vegan liquorice treat - they have a vast array of delectable liquorice sweets with the ingredients clearly displayed so you can opt for the vegan ones. You can even buy a stick of raw liquorice root to chew on! Or you could try an award winning baked treat from the Free From Bakehouse - not all their products are dairy and egg free, but they're selling an increasing number of vegan goodies so you'll find some rich and decadent vegan cakes, cookies, and brownies.

To wash everything down? There are a few places serving up freshly-made vibrant juices and smoothies, and there's even a free fresh water fountain designed for topping up your water bottle to help keep you hydrated.

Don't forget, you can continue stuffing your face when you get home by picking up some treats to take away with you. Loads of fresh fruit and vegetables, bakeries making fresh, warm, rustic loaves of bread in all shapes and sizes, artisan nut butters, amazing Greek olives, spices and oils, to name just a few of the products on offer.

It's incredible to see so many new vegan options are appearing all the time - as with most places in the world, the demand for vegan food is fast-growing and it's clear that it's a movement that's here to stay and will continue to grow exponentially as more and more people realise that it's one of the healthiest and most compassionate ways to live.
