Stop following recipes. Start understanding food.
Most people don’t actually know how to cook… they know how to follow recipes.
They might have a handful of meals they can make without thinking.
But the moment they want something new, they’re back to scrolling online or digging out a cookbook.
So what happens?
They fall into the same common pattern:
The same 4–5 meals on repeat
Little variety from week to week
Meals chosen based on convenience, not intention
Not because they lack motivation… just because they’ve never been shown a better way.

The origin of Cook Like a Nutritionist
A few years ago, I wrote The Plant-Based Power Plan, published with Penguin Life. It focused on plant-based sports nutrition, and helped thousands of athletes and active adults thrive on a diet centred around plants.
Although it included a selection of recipes to help bring the principles to life, I kept hearing the same thing:
“This is great… but please can you write a cookbook next?”
At the same time, I realised something important.
Most people don’t actually need more recipes.
They need to understand how to cook.
Alongside my work as a nutritionist, I’ve spent years working in kitchens and teaching at the world-renowned Demuths Cookery School. Through that, I’ve learned how to build meals that are not just nutritionally sound, but genuinely satisfying and packed with flavour.
So instead of creating another traditional cookbook full of fixed recipes, I built something different.
A system that teaches you the principles behind great meals – so you can create your own, again and again, without ever needing to follow a recipe.
That’s an invaluable skill that can set you up for eating well for life.
FAQs
Macros and calories included? - yes
Vegan? - yes
Suitable if I’m gluten free? - need to check
Measured in cups or grams? - need to check I’m consistent with this!
Paperback copies available? - not yet but I’ve designed the ebook in a way that can be printed at home and the page numbers will be visible on each page
Any hard to find ingredients? all found in UK supermarkets, if accessing this from other countries a small number may not be found but not many
Are the recipes oil free? - good to get fats from whole food sources like nuts, seeds, tahini, avocado as unlike oils they come with protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals etc. Oils contain around 120 calories per tablespoon and without these nutritional benefits. But for me cooking is a balance between nutrition and making food taste delicious and using oil, especially during sauteing, helps infuse the flavours through the dish.
Added sugar free?
